LONDON
(Reuters) - A Mediterranean diet rich in fruits and
vegetables -- already known to protect against heart
disease -- also appears to help ward off diabetes,
Spanish researchers said on Friday.
The study
published in the British Medical Journal showed that
people who stuck closely to the diet were 83 percent
less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those
who did not.

lives |

Archives of Internal Medicine, December
10/24, 2007
Eating the Mediterranean way could help you
live longer, according to the first study to
look at how the dietary pattern relates to
mortality in a US population.
"These results
provide strong evidence for a beneficial
effect of higher conformity with the
Mediterranean dietary pattern on risk of
death from all causes, including deaths due
to cardiovascular disease and cancer, in a
US population," Dr. Panagiota N. Mitrou and
colleagues conclude.

By Leila Tubbeh
Nestled beside Taco
Bell where Eagle Diner once stood, Manny’s
is a hidden treasure certainly worth the
dig.
The range of items
found on Manny’s extensive menu alone is
simply astounding. The menu features Greek
and American-style appetizers, fresh salads,
burgers, pita and American-style sandwiches,
quesadillas, American-style entrees, Greek
specialty platters, hand-tossed pizzas and
calzones. One can even order dessert, a
specialty coffee or a drink from Manny’s
full bar....more
Busy professionals
stuck at the office and stressed college
students studying for finals will be pleased
to know that Manny’s does deliver food
during lunch and dinner hours. Additional
good news as the holiday season approaches,
replete with office parties: Manny’s offers
a catering service and can also rent out the
restaurant to be used as a party space.
Manny’s is open
seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. For

Manny’s, Statesboro’s new Greek grille, is
located where the old Eagle Diner was, or if
you’re a true Statesborian, across from the
old McDonald’s. It’s kind of a tucked
away, nestled between Gate and Taco Bell, but
I think a restaurant of its kind, with a
fairly unique culinary offering, will draw
people into the oyster shell for a culinary
pearl.

My
friends Hanadi and Julie and I went in on
Manny’s second day open to see how this
restaurant held up to Statesboro’s Greek
staple, Holiday’s. I must say, I liked
Manny’s a lot more. My favorite thing in the
land of Greek cuisine is spanikopita, and
the spanikopita was amazing, partially
because the phyllo was crisp and fresh,
partially because the feta (as I found more
individually on the tomato and feta salad)
was authentic and not too salty, so it
didn’t overpower the flavors of the spinach
and dough.
Julie
commented that it was the first time she’d
been really, really impressed by a
restaurant in Statesboro, and Hanadi called
it the best ethnic food she’s had in
Statesboro...
