(Reuters) - A Mediterranean diet rich in fruits and
vegetables -- already known to protect against heart
disease -- also appears to help ward off diabetes,
Spanish researchers said on Friday.
The study
published in the British Medical Journal showed that
people who stuck closely to the diet were 83 percent
less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those
who did not.

Manny's Neighborhood Grille is
nothing less than a Charleston institution. For
almost a decade-and-a-half, the West Ashley
restaurant/bar has served up great food and good
times with a Lowcountry smile and some Greek flair.
It has always struck me as ironic,
that when it comes to having personal TVs in
individual booths in a bar setting, the Greeks seem
to have the market cornered, at least in the West
Ashley area. Years ago, it was this particular
feature that first attracted me to Manny's, but that
was only the beginning. Countless trips later,
Manny's has become a favorite,

Mediterranean diet lengthens
Americans' lives
Archives of Internal Medicine, December 2007
Eating the Mediterranean way
could help you live longer,
according to the first study
to look at how the dietary
pattern relates to mortality
in a US population.
"These results provide
strong evidence for a
beneficial effect of higher
conformity with the
Mediterranean dietary
pattern on risk of death
from all causes, including
deaths due to cardiovascular
disease and cancer, in a US
population,"
Dr. Panagiota N. Mitrou and
colleagues conclude.

LUNCH COUNTER Manny's
From the name of Manny's Neighborhood Grill, you'd guess that this is a comfortable neighborhood restaurant, and that is certainly true, but Manny's is more than that. It's a "Greek/American" restaurant that offers a dizzying array of dishes, ranging from classic Greek specialties to classic American bar food, in the form of tasty meals at gentle prices. more...
Hellenic roots amid Olympic passions
Like holding the 2004 installment of the Olympics at the event's national birthplace, it is exquisitely appropriate to spend much of the 16-day event at a Greek-themed sports bar. I am talking of Manny's, which, along with George's Sports Bar, has the distinction of being one of the few places in the state that is both Greek and a sports bar. more...
MANNY'S NEIGHBORHOOD GRILL
Manny's had been on my mind lately due to the recent closing of the downtown location on Cumberland Street. Since I happened to be in the neighborhood, I decided to drop in and check out Manny's West Ashley location's lunch specials. Smaller and significantly more intimate than its now-defunct sister restaurant, Manny's has a true neighborhood feeling that is aptly reflected in its name. more...
Super Bowl Sunday
If you'd like to see the Super Bowl and then hop on a jet to Jamaica, maybe you'd want to spend your Sunday at Manny's. Classic rock radio station Q104 will be on hand doing a live remote, and there will be three trip giveaways: the Bahamas, Jamaica and Las Vegas. Manny's also will be giving away CDs, T- shirts and tons of prizes. more...
Manny's a good choice for sports enthusiasts
Take away lots of pretty art, insert a television for every few feet of wall space (plus, a few propped on tables) and you've got Manny's version of the space that used to be Beaumonts. Manny's ?? a sports bar where some people go to drink a cold beer, eat a bite and watch a game. It is also a restaurant, which represents a dining establishment for most people. more... |
